As part of the monthly FUSE series at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Western Front is presenting Ya-wen Vivienne Wang’s dynamic composition TYPE A Taipei. This urban symphony is an extraordinary blend of global pop, Japanese Shamisen, Taiwanese Opera, Western classical, and authentic soundscapes captured from Taipei street life.
Wang will conduct eleven musicians improvising with karaoke machines, Asian strings and other worldly instruments.
Wang is a composer, music director, collaborative pianist, vocal coach, TV music program host and interdisciplinary performer. Her recent artistic endeavors include production and curation for the Taiwanese Cultural Festival, and her first original album and performance video produced by CBC TV. This winter 2006 saw her musical direction of the West Coast Premiere of Urinetown at the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver.
TYPE A Taipei is presented in conjunction with Asian Heritage Month.
