Improvisers Vicky Mettler (guitar) and Ellwood Epps (trumpet) sit down with PhD Candidate Sabrina Chang (of upbeat improv) to talk about their philosophical and musical approaches towards improvisation and musique actuelle.
Trading Places: Un Échange D’Improvisateurs Montréal-Vancouver
Each year artists are chosen to represent their communities in ten-day residencies in the alternate host cities, further coordinated by selected emerging local curators. Performances take place in varies venues and location, together and in combination with local musicians. The artists premiere new works, attend musical gatherings, direct ensembles, present concerts, lead workshops and make recordings, forming new connections with local artists. The cultural exchange, with attention given to gender/generational balance, extends beyond the resident musicians, with an expansive continuous music marathon event involving as many as twenty musicians in each city, performing a work created by the host city coordinator as inspired by the NOW Society Supreme Marathons of 2015 and 2016. The culminating event of each residency is a concert of new music, created and performed by the resident musicians and invited guests. Learn more>>
