Beginning in October, Vancouver’s foremost improvising musicians from New Orchestra Workshop will conduct a series of ten weekly workshops in contemporary improvised music; exploring structures for improvisation, the history of this tradition through audio-visual support, live demonstration, and most importantly ensemble work with participants. The series culminates in a concert performance, featuring an ensemble comprised of instructors and participants.
These workshops provide a supportive environment with guidance from experienced professionals who will work with them in an informal atmosphere that encourages experimentation. The emphasis will be on observation and participation. Last year’s series was a huge success. Guest instructors for the month of November include Bill Smith, Saul Berson, Ken Morrison, and Graham Ord.
All the workshops are free and open to all instruments – amateurs and professionals alike. Observers also welcome.
