Confusing the notion of object or original, works in this series take aim at objective truth, empirical knowledge, singular readings, authorship, and the authority of geographic capitals. decentre is a continuing series of exhibitions that consider the use of the documentary and re-mediated forms as a means of disrupting and obscuring centrality. As simulacra, documents have the ability to disseminate throughout the world, each holding and undermining the integrity of the original.
These considerations have, over the past three decades, radically changed the face of Vancouver art. From Fluxus-influenced artists working out of the Western Front and Vancouver conceptual artists using media technology, to Vancouver photo-conceptual artists – Vancouver has emerged as a significant contributor to international art.
