Submission Information

Front Magazine is a journal of cultural work, with a mandate to publish new things by emerging & established Canadian (& international) artists & cultural workers. Front will consider submissions in all forms appropriate to the printed page, including text-based work, image-based work, and works combining the two. We are also looking for writers based in Vancouver to collaborate with on an ongoing basis. Front does not publish reviews or previews, we are concerned with inhabiting the current moment. We like anything meaningful and funny.

Each issue comes together around a theme. Upcoming themes are below. We encourage you to interpret the theme in an unexpected and intellectually engaging way.

Front Magazine’s review process is idiosyncratic and unpredictable. Please be patient, there are only two of us. Multiple submissions are welcome, but if pieces have been submitted elsewhere, please let us know in advance. We think it is great when people send us links to their websites. If we like something but it doesn't fit in a particular issue, we will bookmark your site for the future.

Front pays fees for writers and artists depending on the size of the piece. Generally, $25 per full page and $100 for the cover.

Images must be sent as preview-size JPGs, to a maximum size of 1 Mb per image. If your submission is selected, you will be asked for a 300 dpi image at a size we specify. Do NOT send low-resolution images embedded in Word files, please. This portion of the submission guidelines is completely inflexible.

For text submissions, please consider the following: We rarely publish texts of more than 1700 words. If formatting is critical to your submissions, please let us know.

Texts should be submitted to us via email, as an RTF, TXT or Word attachment. Both Macintosh- and Windows-based files are acceptable. We will even take Open Office files as long as the formatting is not critical to the work. Send us snail mail only if it's really amazing. Paper submissions cannot be returned.

All submissions should include the artist’s name(s), contact information, and a biography of 50 words or less.
