Issue Description
Fall 09: Play
The Fall 2009 issue of Front Magazine, themed “Play,” is available around the Lower Mainland starting on September 1 and elsewhere shortly after. This issue examines the labour of art through the lens of play. It is full of conversations with young cultural workers about exciting new projects, ideas, and practices.
The issue features Cedric Bomford, Geneviève Cloutier, Francisco-Fernando Granados, Laura Hatfield, Beau House, Jenipher Hur, Heidi Nagtegaal, Sarah Race, Helen Reed & Emiliano Sepulveda.
Relaunch & Redesign
The Fall 2009 issue marks the relaunch of Front Magazine, a 20-year-old Vancouver institution, with a new approach to design and content.
We will not be publishing typical art criticism. Our mandate is to work directly with cultural producers and the things they make. We are striving for clarity; we want to have a conversation about art that is meaningful and funny.
To reflect this renewed sense of purpose, our new Art Director, Karianne Blank, has completely redesigned the magazine and Front will henceforth be printed on uncoated paper.
We have moved to a quarterly publishing cycle (from 5 x yearly) and increased our circulation from 5,000 to 8,500 copies.
Background
Front has been published for over 20 years by the Western Front Society, one of Canada’s first artist-run centres. In the course of those years, Front (formerly FRONT) grew from an events calendar and newsletter for the Society’s other programs into an interdisciplinary arts publication and mobile gallery. Renewal is a defining characteristic of magazines and the time has come to reinvent ourselves once more. Front is distributed free throughout the Lower Mainland, and available at select newsstands nationally.
We hope to see you soon. After all, we have mutual friends.
