Context and History

Since its inception in 1974, the Exhibitions program has promoted critical investigations into and surrounding interdisciplinary, media-based, anti-object, and ephemeral practices in contemporary art with particular attention to the contexts and economies in which art is produced. The program has provided a forum for the exhibition of young and emerging artists with the aim of fostering dialogue between local and international art communities. In the early years the program exhibited the work of General Idea, Allyson Clay, Joseph Beuys, Image Bank, Paul Wong, Glenn Lewis, Marian Penner Bancroft, among others. Recent exhibitions have included works by Kathy Slade, Jin-me Yoon, John Pilson, Jimmie Durham, Holly Ward, Rod Dickinson and Tom McCarthy, and Paul Ramirez Jonas.

Publications and Editions

The Exhibitions program supports the development of critical discourse about contemporary art through the publishing of catalogues, artist books, and artist print projects. Recent titles include Speechless: a text for Igor Santizo’s The Invisible Object (Hands Holding the Void) after Giacometti, Kathy Slade: Embroidered Monochrome Propositions and Other New Work and Jayce Salloum: Everything and Nothing.

The Décor Project by Hadley and Maxwell, featuring essays by Melanie O’Brian, Clint Burnham, and Jonathan Middleton, will be released in Fall 2006.
