Orkestra Futura – Meeting of the Minds

admission: $15/$12 Students

Presented in Partnership with Coastal Jazz and Blues Society

For this exciting new project, the ensemble explores the world of electronics and acoustic instruments and the connection between composed work and the world of improvised interpretation. Coat Cooke founded the NOW Orchestra in 1987 with many of Vancouver’s top improvising musicians performing new works from leading composers. More than 20 years later, this internationally lauded band continues to explore new territory and to feature some of the most important musical voices from Canada and abroad. The NOW Orchestra is unique in the world—an improvisational group with a distinct Vancouver stamp. Under Coat Cooke’s powerful leadership, the ensemble’s identity is derived from its unique brand of West Coast improvisation, extraordinary collaborations, and explorations with dance, spoken word, electronics, and inter-cultural music.

Rightly renowned for its longevity and creative output of improvised music, the NOW Orchestra has gained local, national, and international acclaim. Their impact has been documented through their recorded output with collaborators like George Lewis, Barry Guy, and Marilyn Crispell. In addition to their celebrated series of concerts in Vancouver, the Now Orchestra has appeared at jazz festivals in Chicago, Berlin, and Lisbon.

Under the direction of leader Coat Cooke, the NOW Orchestra has taken yet another bold new step and has revamped its name and image. At a concert in November, 2009, the ensemble was re-christened Orkestra Futura. The concert featured a cutting-edge program of technology that saw the ensemble conducted remotely by Pauline Oliveros in Oslo, Lisle Ellis in NYC, Paul Cram in Halifax, and John Oswald in Toronto.

Whether under its old name or under the new moniker, Orkestra Futura explores the world of improvisation, be it in collaboration with video mixing, dance, spoken word or straight-up music. The group continues to evolve in concert or on recordings—like the latest disc called Animal Tales on the NOW Orchestra label.

This incarnation of the band features Coat Cooke saxophones, JP Carter trumpet/electronics, Lee Hutzulak electronics,Chad MacQuarrie electric guitar, Jesse Zubot violin/electronics, Tommy Babin bass, Skye Brooks drums.
