What would you want to hear if you were given a carte blanche for a concert? Music on Main’s Composer-in-Residence Jocelyn Morlock selects Quartet, a work by her late teacher and mentor Nikolai Korndorf. Korndorf’s Quartet will be performed by Vancouver’s Emily Carr String Quartet (Müge Büyükçelen, violin; Cory Blazer, violin; Mieka Michaux, viola; Alasdair Money, cello).
“[Korndorf's] string quartet is a cathartic emotional journey. Written in the form of a requiem, it explores loss, redemption and ecstasy” – Jocelyn Morlock
The Emily Carr String Quartet has quickly established itself as one of BC’s finest music ensembles. Formed in 2006 by members of the Victoria Symphony in Victoria BC, the Emily Carr String Quartet has gone on to perform in the US, Europe and Asia. They have collaborated with artists such as William Preucil, Jamie Parker, Arthur Rowe, the Alcan Quartet and the Tin Alley Quartet. The ECSQ has been featured on CBC radio’s “North by Northwest” and their CD “Hidden Treasure” was nominated for the 2012 classical recording of the year at the Western Canadian music awards.
The Emily Carr String Quartet has performed in Vancouver on the “Music in the Morning” concert series, the Ankara Music Festival, Hornby Festival and the Victoria Summer Music Festival. They have participated in residencies at Stanford University and The Banff Centre.
