Aleesa Cohene

Over the past two decades, Aleesa Cohene has produced video installations derived from existing film footage, archiving and cataloguing thousands of film clips, which become the raw material for video works. Through strategic editing, montage, narration, and musical scoring, the work shapes familiar cultural material into new forms, contexts, characters and relationships. Primarily video installations, her works are now evolving into installation environments with non-video elements: wall-paintings, text works, sculptures and live performance.

While in residence Cohene will conduct a series of workshops with young artists, and work on a new co-commission with Western Front, Gallery 44 (Toronto), and The Rooms (St.John’s).
